iPARTY - SCHOOLS

This component of the project has been delivered to year 10 school leavers by the iparty® Schools Project Committee of:

  • Tasmania Police
  • Tasmanian Ambulance Service
  • Alcohol and Other Drug Service (DHHS)/ Burnie Youth Alcohol and Drug Service (CCI)
  • Youth Health Team/ North West (DHHS)
  • National Schools Drug Education Project/ (DOE)

The Party Safe - North West Program is now known as the iparty® Schools Project and is delivered in high schools across the North West Coast of Tasmania by the service providers listed above. The original members of the project are also representatives on the NWC-CCAP/iparty® Advisory Group along with others who represent services/ organisations with a broader community focus. The iparty® Schools Project is a collaboration between youth service providers and schools delivering information to young people (primarily high school leavers) about issues relating to hosting and attending parties.

The project is an interactive format of about 2 hours duration which incorporates static displays, discussion groups, demonstrations, and games/ quizzes, as well as small working groups which examine scenarios, and discuss informed 'decision making' when consuming alcohol. The combination of 'expo' style presentations and group work gives participants the opportunity to explore and learn within an interactive education environment with professionals from range of related youth services.

Services involved in the project provide information/ activities on issues associated with 'parties' from the focus of their specialist service. That is:
  • Alcohol and Other Drug Services - Standard drink demonstration, legal and healthy limits when consuming alcohol and alcohol legislation.
  • Sexual Health Services - Safer sex practices.
  • Youth Health Team - Healthy relationships and decision making.
  • Police - Legal issues, community and personal responsibility.
  • Ambulance - Personal/peer safety and basic first aid techniques.
  • NSDEP - Linking the iparty® Schools Project with schools/ education, and coordination.

INFO FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AND STUDENTS

iPARTY - Party Safeiparty® is a safe partying project - providing information to young people and their families who are attending a party to make it fun, safe and hassle free for everyone.

Information

People who are informed can make better, more informed choices. Most parties that go wrong are poorly planned and disorganised, or they become chaotic and/or get out of control. Better-planned parties are more enjoyable and can avoid having problems later on.

Planning your Party

Throwing a party? To have a decent party, you need to have a plan. It's a bit more work, but worth it in the end. It's a good idea to have an older person (cool brother or sister) to be a supervising guest at your party.

Things to think about... how many people do you want to come, where are you going to hold your party? How much noise can your neighbours take before they call the cops? Should you talk to your neighbours first? What about sending out invites, with start and finish times?

Attending a party? If you are attending a party you should really let your parents/guardians know; where you are going - who you are with - and what time you intend to be home. I know it's not cool, but they will rest easier knowing your whereabouts. Plus it is way better than them coming to the party to take you home early... HOW EMBARRASSING!

Alcohol and Non-alcoholic Alternatives

Alcohol is a drug, and drinking (and serving) alcohol is choice which comes with responsibilities. If you do not want these responsibilities, then opt for non-alcoholic alternatives such as mocktails. See under Resources & Downloads for mocktail recipes!

Throwing a party? As a host, there are some things you should do and know. Make sure you know the laws around alcohol, if you have it at your party. Consider a bite to eat and some water or cordial for people who have had one too many, or for those who don't drink (some people know you don't need alcohol to have fun).

Respect Yourself and Others

Drinking alcohol and taking drugs may affect your ability to make safe decisions. You need to stay in control so you can make the right and best decisions for yourself.

Alcohol and other drugs are a common part of the party scene. However, there is a difference between relaxing and feeling comfortable, and getting off your face - not knowing what you are doing!

Transport

Arrange safe transport to, and especially from, the party or celebration. It is illegal, stupid and very dangerous to drink and drive.

Arrange public transport, taxi, or a ride with a 'DES' (sober) driver (or, if all else fails, see if you can 'crash out' somewhere safe, like at a trusted friends house).

Your party, your responsibility

The choices you make at a party will decide whether the party is one to remember, or one to forget - remember that.
